The history of the British pub is a long one. We know them to be friendly places where one can enjoy a beer, a glass of wine or more. Here in the United States, there are many establishments that are the next generation of the British pub. They are social centers as they have been for centuries.

2000 years ago (yes, 2000) pubs started as Italian wine bars, tasting bars so to speak. They were called tabernae in 43 AD and as they added more beverages, the main consumers were soldiers passing through Britain. Quenching the thirst of marching Romans, pubs had to expand to serve travelers along the many routes.
